Living Chemical Free… Mostly

I sit down to write this, because I am working cleaning up my act! HA! See what I did there, sigh, I must be tired!

Before I get started, I need to make one thing perfectly clear, this post is informational only, and is not meant to guilt you in any way! We live in a world where people are so judgmental about everything! And they feel the need to guilt others for not doing what they do, or believe they way they do, when it comes to health and wellness especially. Not to even mention politics and religion! It’s like their goal is to cause fear. And whether it’s intentional or not, it’s wrong! It’s not loving, caring or kind. Stating facts for informational purposes is good! Stating your opinion, getting angry (mean) and calling people names like: ignorant, stupid, uneducated, blind… is wrong!

Living chemical free isn’t 100% possible, but it is possible to live mostly chemical free!

When I say “chemical free”, I mean harmful man made chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process.

Here are my top tips, that I am re-establishing in my own home, for living chemical free:

1| Eat Real Food and Real Supplements

Back in the day, and by that I mean before World War II (1939-1945), in the United States, packaged or processed foods were almost non-existent!  From then on,  Modern convenience food saw its beginnings.[1] Many of these products had their origins in military-developed foods designed for storage longevity and ease of preparation in the battle field. Following the war, several commercial food companies had leftover manufacturing facilities, and some of these companies created new freeze-dried and canned foods for home use.[2]

Most processed foods and supplements are made with harmful man made chemicals for preservation, but also for taste, texture and color.

Jillian Michaels says it better than I can: “Most of us don’t think of the food we eat as poison, but some of the ingredients commonly found in processed foods can be considered toxic. By “toxic,” I mean chemicals or highly processed ingredients that aren’t good for you or can cause harm to your health. I’m talking about refined grains, trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and all the other artificial junk you can’t even pronounce on the ingredient lists. Any food that has been canned, dehydrated, or had chemicals added to it is a processed food, and these foods make up about 60 percent of the average American diet.”[3]

I won’t go into a comprehensive list of what to avoid; however, click HERE, and you’ll be directed to a top ten list of chemicals to avoid in your food!

But more than anything, just eat real food! If the food packaging has more than five ingredients, and contains ingredients you can’t pronounce, don’t eat it. Easy peasy! It really doesn’t have to be complicated!

Superfood-Plate2

Supplements are tricky, but they don’t have to be complicated! Supplements are processed, but they don’t have to be full of chemical fillers and dyes! Often times supplements are so full of junk, the junk blocks the proper absorption! You want supplements that are clean, do what they say they do, saving you time and money, and your health!  Hammer Nutrition has the best supplements out there! Super clean, effective, and affordable! More of my favorite brands include: Gaia and Garden of Life .

This is a great place to start! And as you begin to avoid these chemicals, you will find it easier to avoid others!

May I say however; my brain can explode with frustrations, because many people get obsessed with food and the ingredients. For example, a friend found an amazing sliced turkey at Costco, and she shared it with a Facebook group she was a part of, and someone commented that even though the only ingredients were turkey and water, the turkeys were “vegetarian raised” which means they most likely were fed corn, and corn causes inflammation. REALLY?!  That turkey is FAR BETTER an alternative, than the turkey meat that is chalk full of nitrates, dies and fillers!

Let’s not get that obsessed okay?

2| Use Microfiber Cloths and Essential Oils

Several years ago, I was cleaning the  kitchen with the giant Costco bottle of 409, when Mike came home and said to me “There HAS to be an alternative to these cleaners! The chemical smell is overwhelming and can’t be safe!”. Well, as I was determined to learn more about making my own household cleaner, I was shocked to learn what exactly are in household cleaners and effects they have on our health!

We assume they are safe, but in fact they are very toxic!

The average household contains about 62 toxic chemicals, say environmental experts. We’re exposed to them routinely — from the phthalates in synthetic fragrances to the noxious fumes in oven cleaners. Ingredients in common household products have been linked to asthma, cancer, reproductive disorders, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity.[4]

Clorox_Logo-4CDid you know Clorox is currently re-running their 2015 ad, for what I can only call  a campaign, against natural cleaners? In these commercials, the “mom” is lecturing her grown up daughter for using a generic Jasmine cleaner. In other commercial “mom” is again lecturing her daughter for using generic Citrus Peel Shine, again mocking her, saying “you might as well use orange juice to clean up grape juice” … And though this might not seem like a big deal, it is! Clorox is fear mongering, putting fear into the hearts of people saying the only clean is “bleach clean”, when in fact, that simply isn’t the truth! Note: I get that the products used in the commercial are fake, and are still considered a commercial product. However; you can sugar coat it all you want, Clorox is trying to get you to believe that natural cleaners, don’t work, and you are ridiculous if you use them! Natural homemade cleaners especially those that contain essential oils, water and white vinegar, are just as effective as commercial household cleaners! If not better!

Commercial cleaners, man are they convenient!  When we were preparing our home to sell, I didn’t even want to think about making my own cleaners so I bought commercial household cleaners. Six months later, I am still using them, and I don’t like it! I don’t like the smell, I don’t like how they make us feel, and I especially don’t like that I have to be on my toes because they are so toxic they could really hurt my kiddos!

Here’s what I am replacing my commercial household cleaners with, and though the initial cost, may be more than your favorite bottle of cleaner, your intial cost will actually save you HUNDREDS of dollars each year, as well as the great health benefits!

You can literally spend less than $50-$250, and have everything you need to clean all the surfaces of your home!

You may gasp, and say “TWO-HUNDRED-FIFTY DOLLARS???”, my answer is YES! Just think about all your household cleaners in your house: paper towels, window cleaner, multipurpose cleaner, bleach, furniture polish, mop, broom… just to name a few! The average household; depending on demographics like; where you live, income level, education, age and family size[5], spends $573-$854 a year on household cleaners! They add up fast! A quick toss of a cleaner now and again into the cart, adds up! And how many cleaners do you have sitting in cabinet that you either forgot you had, or really didn’t like, but you don’t want to throw it away?

So the initial cost of up to $250, can be overwhelming, until you realize how much you actually spend a year on commercial household cleaners and supplies!

Then the environmental impact of switching to Norwex, is HUGE! Just think of all the chemicals we wash down the drain, and all the paper towels we toss in the trash!

doTERRA Essential Oils: In addition to Norwex cloths, I use essential oils for cleaning! With natural cleansing and purifying properties, certain essential oils can be a helpful part of your regular cleaning routine. Not only can essential oils be used to cleanse surfaces and purify the air, but they leave behind a pleasant aroma that will instantly make your home feel clean and refreshed.

green washing

Wow! Have I bought into those “catch words” like: organic, natural, green, eco friendly and non-toxic!

Using a website I was recently introduced to

Ew

I can only recommend TWO companies, out of the many I was SURE were clean!

And those are:

doterra-logo

doTERRA. Though they are not listed at all under EWG’s page, I know this company well and fully trust their sourcing and ingredients:

  • Skincare
  • Hair Care

and

beautycounter_logo

Beauty Counter for their:

  • Skincare
  • Hair Care
  • Body Care
  • Sun Protection
  • Cosmetics

Skin Deep’s website is an amazing source, that you can type in one of over 65, 000 products, and they rate the toxicity of your product! I believe you will be shocked at those natural product… they aren’t really safe!

In Conclusion

As I wrote this out, it really gave me excitement and hope! I mean, changing only THREE areas of our lives can dramatically chemically detox our lives! And it doesn’t have to cost much at all!

Have fun! Encourage others to join you in changing these three area’s of your homes!
